Resources to Learn More about Anti-Racism

Part of our role as a provider of affordable housing on the Eastside is to use our platform, guided by our mission, vision and values, to educate ourselves and others about racial injustice; so we can engage in anti-racist work to support equitable outcomes for the black lives at our communities and everywhere. As activist Angela Davis said, “In a racist society, it’s not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist.”

We can’t do this work without you and your commitment to be anti-racist. We have created this resource page so you can watch, read, listen, and donate as you become more aware of the Black Lives Matter Movement and what actions you can take to support black lives, elevate black voices, and reflect on what it means to be an ally. Our full statement is on the bottom of this page.

In Solidarity: Black Lives Matter

Imagine Housing stands in solidarity with those in our communities faced with racial injustice. We support the actions at the local and global level, calling for justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. We say their names and remember those before them who have been murdered. We share in the outrage and heartbreak of these killings – yet we must do more if we want to seek justice and sustainable transformation in black communities.

Amidst COVID-19, we recognize that a much larger pandemic exists in our country that must be addressed – racism. We acknowledge and condemn the history of racism in our country and its connection to housing. Housing is a foundational right that creates stability, increases wealth, and offers security. The structures and systems in place are inherently unjust and rooted in white privilege, and have led to black communities disproportionately experiencing displacement, housing discrimination, poverty, and decreased earning potential. This results in black people experiencing homelessness, housing instability, evictions, and intergenerational poverty at a much higher rate.

As a provider of affordable housing on the Eastside we want to use our platform, guided by our mission, vision and values, to educate ourselves and others about racial injustice; and engage in anti-racist work to support equitable outcomes for black residents living at our communities and everywhere. As activist Angela Davis said, “In a racist society, it’s not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist.”

We can’t do this work without you and your commitment to be anti-racist. We want to actively help everyone become more aware of the Black Lives Matter movement, learn what actions we can all take to support black lives, elevate black voices, and reflect on what it means to be an ally.

Finally, we recognize as an agency and as individuals that those who are white experience unearned privilege because of institutional racism; and that many Imagine Housing residents and employees experience a much different America as black people. We stand with those residents and employees of Imagine Housing – acknowledging that white privilege exists and while we seek to understand, we never truly will, but we stand with you.

We have so much work to do in becoming allies for racial justice in our country. We hope as a community you will join us and hold us accountable in supporting policies, movements, and outcomes that lift up and support black lives.

In solidarity,

Imagine Housing
