A history of offering homes and hope since 1987
St. Andrew’s Housing Group (SAHG) – later to become Imagine Housing – was founded in 1987 by members of Saint Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Bellevue. The organization became independently incorporated in 1989 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. Until 1993, SAHG was a volunteer-led organization. During this time, SAHG volunteers worked diligently to learn the business of developing affordable housing, establish SAHG within the market, create networking relationships, and build a solid reputation as a trustworthy developer of affordable housing. In 1992, SAHG opened its first housing development, Andrew’s Arms, providing 14 units of affordable housing in Issaquah.
In 1993, SAHG’s first executive director was hired and the groundbreaking work of the volunteers began to pay off as SAHG entered into a period of dramatic growth and accomplishment. In 2011, SAHG took the next step toward expanding its visibility in the community and unveiled a new name for the organization, Imagine Housing, to more broadly reflect our mission to build and maintain affordable housing and to support our residents.
Today, Imagine Housing’s 427 affordable living apartments are home to nearly 1,000 individuals in Mercer Island, Issaquah, Redmond, Bellevue and Kirkland.
“A society is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable members. Many of those we greet every day who bag our groceries, style our hair, teach our children, protect our neighborhoods and property, do not earn wages sufficient to live in our housing market. Imagine Housing provides a way for these people and even our most vulnerable neighbors to stay a part of our community in safe, attractive, well made and ‘blended in’ housing. Without a doubt, that enriches all of us.” Linda Bergman, Imagine Housing Board Member
